The earliest books and public domain

Under US copyright law, a work first published in a given year generally enters the public domain 95 years later, on January 1 of the following year. The original Nancy Drew Mystery Stories began publication in 1930, so as of January 1, 2026, the earliest title in the series ("The Secret of the Old Clock") is now in the US public domain, with each later volume following on the same 95-year schedule in the years ahead.

Public-domain status applies to the original 1930s text of those specific books in the United States; it does not extend to later revised editions, to the NANCY DREW trademark itself, to HeR Interactive's games, or to any Nancy Drew works still under copyright -- and public-domain terms differ by country, so a title's status elsewhere (the EU, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Russia) may not match its US status. Where we reference a specific book's public-domain status, we mean the original US edition only.

Why we use this material

As a non-commercial fan resource, the Hub uses copyrighted images and text solely to inform and celebrate the franchise for its community -- covering games, books, and news, with credit to the original creators wherever possible.
